So long, kindergarten!

And just like that, Miss Zoe's kindergarten year concluded last week. It seems as though it was only yesterday when I was dressing her in a somewhat oversized, awkward uniform and hurriedly snapping those "first day of kindergarten" pictures before we all piled into the car to avoid being late. I remember Zoe's slightly anxious expression as we took more photos in front of the school, then walked together to her classroom to help her settle in before giving her one last big hug.

This was her first year at Oakridge School, and she didn't know anyone, having been accustomed to the same preschool teacher for the past few years at her previous school. I was delighted to see her adapting well, making new friends, and enjoying her new school and teacher. Her teacher, Mrs. Schley, was a patient and caring individual who calmly guided the class of 14 children. She is retiring after 20 years of service.
April 30th marked the start of the end of the kindergarten year with "Walk to the Future." It is a really special tradition where kindergarteners physically walk from the Early Childhood Center (different building, same campus) to the 'Big Building' where 1st-12th graders attend. It is an emotional, tear-jerking moment for parents and teachers. I tried really hard not to cry that day. Due to rain, the famous walk didn't happen outside, but the school did a wonderful job creating a route in the big building for the graduating kindergarteners to feel that excitement and pride.

The event continued with a spring recital, where it was evident that the kids had worked so hard to learn and memorize. Over the spring semester, Zoe would tell me the songs that they are working on so I could add them to my Spotify playlist - we would replay those songs every day after school. Bless Coach T for coming up with all the music sequences and choreographies (and teaching all that to 40+ kids) - it truly takes someone with exceptional dedication and skillset to do it all.

What would have been an outdoor picnic happened in the gym as drizzling rain turned into epic pouring. That didn't dampen anyone's spirit.

Last Friday, the Early Childhood Center wrapped up the school year with a lovely outdoor picnic, joined by many families. We were especially thankful that my mother-in-law was visiting and could share in the celebration. Each student received a bag filled with their artwork and journals from the year, along with a special award recognizing their achievements. Zoe was honored with the "Cooperation Award" for being “the ultimate role model for working fabulously well with others.”

It was a beautiful, chaotically joyful day for all of us. Kindergarten year personally holds a special place in my heart - I still have fond memories of that year as a Korean kid who knew nothing about the US, including English. My teacher welcomed me and nurtured me in a way that laid a strong, positive foundation for my entire experience with school and teachers. To this day, I remain in touch with my kindergarten teacher and make a point to visit her - with my kids - whenever we return to the town I spent my early childhood years.
It fills up my heart watching her grow, finding a school that is a wonderful place to make friends and create memories. working with teachers and staff who truly cherish these kids. May you always find joy and excitement in everything you do, Zoe! We are so proud of you - love you!
