The Never Ending Work Day: Call, Post-Call, and the Surgical Residency Schedule

As a resident’s wife, I joined multiple private Facebook groups to share solidarity with other doctors’ wives. Through one of those groups, I stumbled upon a blog “Surthriving” by Nashira, who shares her journey of surgical residency through her gifted writing. I often times found myself nodding my head in agreement for half an hour straight while catching up on all of her past posts. As her post concludes, while every surgical specialty deals with slightly different schedules, the challenges facing abusive hours and lack of time for surgical residents to recuperate are about equivalent. 

Since I always get questions like “why isn’t he home” or “why is he always tired” I thought I would share some insight to a typical surgical resident’s “call” schedule on top of all other commitments he must fulfill.
